Dear Family!

People say, when looking for a job it is not what you know but whom you know that counts. We see that happen in our gospel today. Some theologians and bible scholars reflect that this could be the first schism in the church which took place under the eyes of Jesus - two disciples against ten and ten against two. The reason of the dispute is not any theological discussion or dogma but the lust for power, competition for position.

We see this as the beginning of a painful history of ecclesial divisions and conflicts mostly driven by petty rivalries.

The Church understands leadership and its greatness in terms of service. In the first reading the Suffering Servant is given to us as a model of leadership. Sacrifices are the determining factor for acknowledging the presence of God in worship. It is through suffering, sacrifice, and self-giving that God carries out his plans of salvation.

As I was listening to the speaker in the Priest Convocation this morning, this thought came into my mind. When the people bring out the gifts of bread and wine, they also bring out their sacrifices to the priests to be offered to God along with the Sacrifice of Christ - the only acceptable sacrifice. It is also merged with the sacrifice of the priest. That is why he prays, “Pray my brethren, that my sacrifice and yours...”

St. James the Greater was privileged to be the first of the apostles to give his life for Christ. St. John is the only apostle who was not martyred but lived through two attempts upon his life. Let us humbly reflect on the leadership built on our sacrificial service rendered to God and Church thus we offer Jesus as the best example and the only Shepherd who leads us in our sacrifices.

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA): (Previously known as RCIA)
We start the OCIA program today for our parish. We thank all the members of this program along with Deacon Larry. We pray for all the candidates and wish them well!

Special Second Collection on October 27th to assist with Hurricane Relief Efforts: The diocese will be sending all the proceeds to the relief. Let us keep in prayer all those who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods and with those who are responding with rescue and repair efforts. Thank you for your support!

Special Masses at the Cemetery & Church for ALL SOULS DAY: This year, All Souls Day falls on a Saturday. We have added a few masses to accommodate the spiritual needs of people. We will still have the usual 8:00am mass. In addition to that we will have a Special Mass at 10:00am in our Cemetery. It has been a while since we celebrated a mass at the Cemetery grounds, and it is the perfect day for it. Please join us in prayer at the back of the mausoleum. There will also be the usual 4:30pm which is the Vigil Mass of Sunday. And the last of All Souls Day Mass will be a Special Mass at 7:00pm for all those who have passed away from our parish last year. We will have their pictures blessed and names read out. This special Mass at 7:00pm will be in our Church.

Special Days in October: The Silver and Gold Anniversary Mass and celebration is today October 20th at 3:00pm at the Cathedral and there will be a special Annual Blue Mass on Wednesday, October 30th 10:30am also at the Cathedral.

Confirmation is on May 7th, 2025
We will have the Confirmation Mass on May 7th, 2025 at 5:00pm in our Church presided by Most Reverend Arthur Serratelli. At present we have 42 children collectively. I thank our Faith Formation Team, Mrs. Escarlen Duran PCL, our Confirmation Coordinator Deacon Rob Fisher, Mr. Matthew Crouse the SSPJ Religious Education teacher, and the parents in forming our children for this important sacrament. Sunday Mass attendance is the source of all faith formation!

Pastor’s Appeal: I am forever grateful to all of you for your generosity. We continue to receive help from families. As you have heard me say more than a few times now that this year our parish’s focus will be our children and investing in our children. The demands of the church is such that we put in extra care in this venture to making our church a vibrant community. I ask you to prayerfully consider helping us with the Pastor’s Appeal this year so that our planned ideas could be implemented in time for our children and for our parish.

Querida Familia!

La gente dice que, cuando se busca trabajo, lo que cuenta no es lo que se sabe, sino a quién se conoce. Vemos que esto sucede en nuestro evangelio de hoy. Algunos teólogos y estudiosos de la Biblia reflexionan sobre que este podría ser el primer cisma en la iglesia que tuvo lugar ante los ojos de Jesús: dos discípulos contra diez y diez contra dos. La razón de la disputa no es ninguna discusión teológica o dogma, sino el afán de poder, la competencia por la posición. Vemos esto como el comienzo de una dolorosa historia de divisiones y conflictos eclesiales impulsados en su mayoría por pequeñas rivalidades.

La Iglesia entiende el liderazgo y su grandeza en términos de servicio. En la primera lectura se nos presenta al Siervo Sufriente como modelo de liderazgo. El sacrificio es el factor determinante para reconocer la presencia de Dios en el culto. Es a través del sufrimiento, del sacrificio y de la entrega que Dios lleva a cabo sus planes de salvación.

Mientras escuchaba al orador en la Convocatoria Sacerdotal esta mañana, me vino a la mente este pensamiento: cuando el pueblo ofrece los dones del pan y del vino, también ofrece sus sacrificios a los sacerdotes para que sean ofrecidos a Dios junto con el Sacrificio de Cristo, el único sacrificio aceptable. También está fusionado con el sacrificio del sacerdote. Por eso ora: “Orad, hermanos míos, que mi sacrificio y el vuestro...”

Santiago el Mayor tuvo el privilegio de ser el primero de los apóstoles en dar su vida por Cristo. San Juan es el único apóstol que no fue martirizado, pero vivió dos atentados contra su vida. Reflexionemos humildemente sobre el liderazgo construido sobre nuestro servicio sacrificial rendido a Dios y a la Iglesia, ofreciendo así a Jesús como el mejor ejemplo y el único Pastor que nos guía en nuestros sacrificios.

Orden de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos (OCIA): (Anteriormente conocida como RCIA)
Hoy comenzamos el programa OCIA en nuestra parroquia. Agradecemos a todos los miembros de este programa junto con el diácono Larry. ¡Oramos por todos los candidatos y les deseamos lo mejor!

Una segunda colecta especial el 27 de octubre para ayudar con los esfuerzos de socorro tras el huracán: La diócesis enviará todos los fondos recaudados para ayudar. Oremos por todos aquellos que han perdido a sus seres queridos, sus hogares y sus medios de vida y por aquellos que están respondiendo con los esfuerzos de rescate y reparación. ¡Gracias por su apoyo!

Misas especiales en el cementerio para el DÍA DE LOS FIELES DIFUNTOS: Este año, el Día de los Fieles Difuntos cae en sábado. Hemos añadido algunas misas para dar cabida a las necesidades espirituales de las personas. Habrá la misa habitual de las 8:00am. Además de eso, tendremos una misa especial a las 10:00am en nuestro cementerio. Ha pasado un tiempo desde que celebramos una misa en los terrenos del cementerio, y es el día perfecto para hacelo. Únase a nosotros en oración en la parte trasera del mausoleo. También habrá la misa habitual de las 4:30pm, que es la misa de vigilia del domingo. Y la última misa del Día de los Fieles Difuntos será una misa especial a las 7:00pm para todos aquellos que han fallecido en nuestra parroquia el año pasado. Bendeciremos sus fotos y leeremos sus nombres. Esta misa especial a las 7:00pm será en nuestra iglesia.

Días especiales en octubre: Nuestra diócesis tendrá la misa y celebración del aniversario de plata y oro que se llevará a cabo hoy, 20 de octubre, a las 3:00pm en la Catedral. Habrá la misa azul anual especial el miércoles 30 de octubre en la Catedral a las 10:30am.

La misa de Confirmación será el 7 de mayo de 2025: Tendremos la Misa de Confirmación el 7 de mayo de 2025 a las 5:00pm en nuestra Iglesia presidida por el Reverendísimo Arthur Serratelli. En este momento tenemos 42 niños en conjunto. Agradezco a nuestro Equipo de Formación en la Fe, a la Sra. Escarlen Duran, a nuestro Coordinador de Confirmación, el Diácono Rob Fisher, al Sr. Matthew Crouse, el maestro de Educación Religiosa de la SSPJ, y a los padres por formar a nuestros niños para este importante sacramento. ¡La asistencia a la Misa dominical es la fuente de toda formación en la fe!

Apelación del Pastor: Estoy eternamente agradecido a todos ustedes por su generosidad. Seguimos recibiendo ayuda de las familias. Como me han oído decir más de una vez, este año el enfoque de nuestra parroquia serán nuestros niños y la inversión en ellos. Las exigencias de la iglesia son tales que ponemos especial cuidado en esta iniciativa para hacer de nuestra iglesia una comunidad vibrante. Les pido que consideren en oración ayudarnos con la Campaña del Pastor este año para que nuestras ideas planificadas puedan implementarse a tiempo para nuestros niños y para nuestra parroquia.
