Dear Family!

This Sunday is the second to the last Sunday of the church year. The following Sunday we will celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. The readings logically speak about the ‘last things’ (Eschatology). The parable of the fig tree sprouting its leaves points us to late spring and early summer which reminds us of good times for the people. For us Catholic Christians, the end of the world is not God losing control of the earth, rather God bringing things to a triumphant end.

The Book of Daniel is considered the first of the apocalyptic literature in the Bible is filled with joy and hope in the kingdom ruled directly by the Lord. This type of literature is filled with mysterious language in which everything has a symbolic value: numbers, colors, animals, types of clothing etc. and they should be carefully decoded.

The Gospel also opens with the typical images of the apocalyptic literature: The sun will grow dark, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall out of the sky, and the whole universe will be shaken (vv24-25). Jesus takes these images to console them and not frighten them. Plagues, famines, violence and persecutions which they must confront are signs of a world still dominated by evil but as Christians we are people of hope.

Today (33rd Sunday) is the World Day of the Poor: Why Pope Francis established the day in 2017. After the Year of Mercy, the pope said he wanted to set aside a day so that, throughout the world, Christian communities could become even greater signs of Christ's charity for those in need. We are called, Pope Francis wrote in his first World Day of the Poor message, "to draw near to the poor, to encounter them, to meet their gaze, to embrace them, and to let them feel the warmth of love that breaks through their solitude. Their outstretched hand is also an invitation to step out of our certainties and comforts, and to acknowledge the value of poverty in itself.” The pope said that for Christ's disciples, "poverty is, above all, a call to follow Jesus in his own poverty," and he asked Catholics to take as their example Saint Francis of Assisi, who kept his gaze fixed on Christ, allowing him to see and serve the poor.

Next Sunday (Christ the King) a day of Remembrance to pray for Religious Freedom: Attacks on Catholic Churches in the U.S.
At least 360 incidents have occurred across 43 states and the District of Columbia since May 2020. Incidents include arson, statues beheaded, limbs cut, smashed, and painted, gravestones defaced with swastikas and anti-Catholic language and American flags next to them burned, and other destruction and vandalism. This list shows incidents of vandalism, arson, or other destruction at Catholic sites that have been publicly reported in news media. It excludes incidents where circumstances suggest a motive other than hostility toward the Church.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to Monday, Dec 9th: Please remember that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is always a Holy Day of Obligation, even when it is transferred to another day. So, Dec 9th, Monday is a Day of Obligation.

Advent Penance Service: Please join the parish community for a Penance Service on December 10th. The Faith Formation Team, parents, children will have their penance at 4:30pm in the Church. At 7:00pm the penance service for all parishioners will take place in the Church.

Jubilee Year 2025: Pope Francis has announced that the Church will celebrate a Jubilee Year in 2025, with the theme of ‘Pilgrims of Hope’. In preparation for the Jubilee Year, Pope Francis is asking Catholics to prepare by dedicating time to study the documents of the Second Vatican Council and focus on prayer. All the four constitutions of Vatican II (On Sacred Liturgy, Light to the Nations, Word of God, and the Church in the Modern World) need revisiting. Please stay tuned for more information on this topic.

Pastor’s Appeal, Thanks to the Finance Council and Faith Formation Team: I am forever grateful to all of you for your generosity. I thank all the members of the Finance Council in presenting to all of you the importance of the Appeal this year. I also thank all the children who were involved in the presentation. I ask you to prayerfully consider helping us with the Pastor’s Appeal this year so that our planned ideas could be implemented in time for our children and for our parish.

33º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Querida Familia!

Este domingo es el penúltimo domingo del año eclesiástico. El domingo siguiente celebraremos la fiesta de Cristo Rey. Las lecturas hablan lógicamente de las “últimas cosas” (escatología). La parábola de la higuera que echa hojas nos lleva a finales de la primavera y principios del verano, lo que nos recuerda los buenos tiempos para el pueblo. Para nosotros, los cristianos católicos, el fin del mundo no es que Dios pierda el control de la tierra, sino que Dios lleve las cosas a un final triunfal.

El libro de Daniel, considerado el primero de la literatura apocalíptica de la Biblia, está lleno de alegría y esperanza en el reino gobernado directamente por el Señor. Este tipo de literatura está llena de un lenguaje misterioso en el que todo tiene un valor simbólico: números, colores, animales, tipos de ropa, etc. y deben ser descifrados con cuidado.

El Evangelio también se abre con las imágenes típicas de la literatura apocalíptica: el sol se oscurecerá, la luna no dará su luz, las estrellas caerán del cielo y todo el universo se sacudirá (vv. 24-25). Jesús toma estas imágenes para consolarlos y no para asustarlos. Las plagas, las hambrunas, la violencia y las persecuciones que deben afrontar son signos de un mundo todavía dominado por el mal, pero como cristianos somos personas de esperanza.

Hoy (33° domingo) se celebra la Jornada Mundial de los Pobres: Por qué el Papa Francisco instituyó esta jornada en 2017. Después del Año de la Misericordia, el Papa dijo que quería dedicar una jornada para que, en todo el mundo, las comunidades cristianas pudieran convertirse en signos aún mayores de la caridad de Cristo hacia los necesitados. Estamos llamados, escribió el Papa Francisco en su primer mensaje para la Jornada Mundial de los Pobres, "a acercarnos a los pobres, a encontrarlos, a encontrar su mirada, a abrazarlos y hacerles sentir el calor del amor que rompe su soledad. Su mano extendida es también una invitación a salir de nuestras certezas y comodidades, y a reconocer el valor de la pobreza en sí misma". El Papa dijo que para los discípulos de Cristo, "la pobreza es, sobre todo, una llamada a seguir a Jesús en su propia pobreza", y pidió a los católicos que siguieran como ejemplo a San Francisco de Asís, que mantuvo su mirada fija en Cristo, permitiéndole ver y servir a los pobres.

Al menos 360 incidentes han ocurrido en 43 estados y el Distrito de Columbia desde mayo de 2020. Los incidentes incluyen incendios provocados, estatuas decapitadas, miembros cortados, destrozados y pintados, lápidas profanadas con esvásticas y lenguaje anticatólico y banderas estadounidenses quemadas junto a ellas, y otros tipos de destrucción y vandalismo. Esta lista muestra incidentes de vandalismo, incendios provocados u otros tipos de destrucción en lugares católicos que han sido reportados públicamente en los medios de comunicación. Excluye incidentes en los que las circunstancias sugieren un motivo distinto a la hostilidad hacia la Iglesia.

La Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción se traslada al lunes 9 de diciembre: Recordad que la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción es siempre un Día de Precepto, incluso cuando se traslada a otro día. Así que, el lunes 9 de diciembre es un Día de Precepto.

Servicio de penitencia de Adviento: Únase a la comunidad parroquial para un servicio de penitencia el 10 de diciembre. El equipo de formación en la fe, los padres y los niños tendrán su penitencia a las 4:30pm en la iglesia. Y las 7:00pm se llevará a cabo el servicio de penitencia para todos los feligreses en la iglesia.

Año de Jubileo 2025: El Papa Francisco ha anunciado que la Iglesia celebrará un Año de Jubileo en 2025, con el tema de “Peregrinos de la esperanza”. En preparación para el Año de Jubileo, el Papa Francisco pide a los católicos que se preparen dedicando tiempo a estudiar los documentos del Concilio Vaticano II y centrándose en la oración. Es necesario revisar las cuatro constituciones del Vaticano II (Sobre la Sagrada Liturgia, Luz de las Naciones, Palabra de Dios y La Iglesia en el Mundo Moderno). Estén atentos para obtener más información sobre este tema.

Apelación del Pastor, Agradecimientos al Consejo de Finanzas y al Equipo de Formación en la Fe: Estoy eternamente agradecido a todos ustedes por su generosidad. Agradezco a todos los miembros del Consejo de Finanzas por presentarles a todos ustedes la importancia de la apelación de este año. También agradezco a todos los niños que participaron en la presentación.
