Dear Family!

As we delve deeper into the season of Advent the theme of journeying together inspires us. The first reading describes the promised joyful return of the people of God from the Babylonian exile which looks to the future of returning to the New Jerusalem where Christ the King will rule in our hearts. In the second reading St. Paul encourages the community in Philippi to discern the will of the God for the community in order to prepare themselves in holiness for the “the Day of Christ”.

Devout preparation for Christ in Advent is accompanied by personal prayer and reflection and we witness the three graces in the gospel today - Baptism, Repentance, and Forgiveness. The Baptism of John the Baptist is not the Sacrament of Baptism, but a ‘Sacramental’ or ‘Symbolic action’ at Jordan to express people’s desire to wash away their evil past.

Though the Baptism of John was a symbolic action, only with repentance the sin of the past is washed away. Repentance is understood better or lived better by feeling sorry (Psalm 51) AND by being encouraged to radically change our relationship with God and people for better. This repentance will in turn bring about the forgiveness of sin. Forgiveness is a healing, a making whole.

As we are set out to prepare the Way of the Lord, we come across two important Marian Feasts: Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (December 9 - A Day of Obligation) and The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Dec 12). There will be the usual Guadalupe celebrations on Sunday Dec 15 th after the Spanish Mass.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to Monday, Dec 9th: Please remember that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is always a Holy Day of Obligation, even when it is transferred to another day. So, Dec 9th , Monday is a Day of Obligation. The Marianists have collaborated with a film production company on “I Am The Immaculate Conception”, a documentary film that presents the Lourdes apparition as well as other Scriptural references to Our Lady. It will appear in selected theaters through Fathom Events on December 12, 14, and 17.

Parish Financial Reports: I thank all the members of the Financial Council in carefully preparing the reports for the parish community. The council and I are available in case of clarity and further explanation. As we could see considerable savings on the report, we continue to maintain much needed repairs and renovations to our buildings. I thank all of you for all the sacrifices you make in providing for your parish community.

Advent Penance Service: Please join the parish community for a Penance Service on December 10th. The Faith Formation Team, parents, and children will have their penance at 4:30pm in the Church. At the 7:00pm penance service for all parishioners will take place in the Church.

Jubilee Year 2025: Pope Francis has announced that the Church will celebrate a Jubilee Year in 2025, with the theme of ‘Pilgrims of Hope’. In preparation for the Jubilee Year, Pope Francis is asking Catholics to prepare by dedicating time to study the documents of the Second Vatican Council and focus on prayer. All the four constitutions of Vatican II (On Sacred Liturgy, Light to the Nations, Word of God, and the Church in the Modern World) need revisiting. Please stay tuned for more information on this topic. Bishop Checchio will open the 2025 Jubilee Year in the Diocese of Metuchen at the 5:00pm Mass at St. Francis Cathedral on Saturday, December 28, 2024, the Feast of The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

Segundo Domingo De Adviento

¡Querida Familia!

A medida que profundizamos en el tiempo de Adviento, el tema de caminar juntos nos inspira. La primera lectura describe el regreso gozoso prometido del pueblo de Dios desde el exilio babilónico, que mira hacia el futuro del regreso a la Nueva Jerusalén donde Cristo Rey gobernará en nuestros corazones. En la segunda lectura, San Pablo anima a la comunidad de Filipos a discernir la voluntad de Dios para la comunidad con el fin de prepararse en santidad para el “Día de Cristo”.

La preparación devota para Cristo en Adviento va acompañada de oración y reflexión personal, y hoy somos testigos de las tres gracias en el evangelio: Bautismo, Arrepentimiento y Perdón. El Bautismo de Juan el Bautista no es el Sacramento del Bautismo, sino una “acción sacramental” o “simbólica” en el Jordán para expresar el deseo de las personas de borrar su pasado malvado.

Aunque el bautismo de Juan fue un acto simbólico, sólo con el arrepentimiento se borra el pecado del pasado. El arrepentimiento se entiende mejor o se vive mejor cuando nos arrepentimos (Salmo 51) y cuando nos animamos a cambiar radicalmente nuestra relación con Dios y con la gente para mejor. Este arrepentimiento traerá a su vez el perdón del pecado. El perdón es una sanación, una santificación .

Mientras nos disponemos a preparar el Camino del Señor, nos encontramos con dos Fiestas Marianas importantes: Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Bienaventurada Virgen María (9 de diciembre - Día de Precepto) y la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (12 de diciembre). Habrá las celebraciones guadalupanas habituales el domingo 15 de diciembre después de la Misa en español .

La Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción se traslada al lunes 9 de diciembre: Recuerden que la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción es siempre un Día de Precepto, incluso cuando se traslada a otro día. Así, el lunes 9 de diciembre es un Día de Precepto. Los Marianistas han colaborado con una productora cinematográfica en “Yo soy la Inmaculada Concepción”, un documental que presenta la aparición de Lourdes, así como otras referencias bíblicas a Nuestra Señora. Se presentará en cines seleccionados a través de “Fathom Events” los días 12, 14 y 17 de diciembre.

Informes financieros de la parroquia: Agradezco a todos los miembros del Consejo Financiero por preparar cuidadosamente los informes para la comunidad parroquial. El consejo y yo estamos disponibles en caso de que sea necesario aclarar alguna duda o dar más explicaciones. Como pudimos ver ahorros considerables en el informe, seguimos realizando las reparaciones y renovaciones que tanto se necesitan en nuestros edificios. Les agradezco a todos ustedes por todos los sacrificios que hacen para ayudar a su comunidad parroquial.

Servicio de penitencia de Adviento: Únase a la comunidad parroquial para un servicio de penitencia el 10 de diciembre. El equipo de formación de la fe, los padres y los niños tendrán su penitencia a las 4:30 pm en la iglesia. El servicio de penitencia para todos los feligreses se llevará a cabo a las 7:00pm en la iglesia.

Año Jubilar 2025: El Papa Francisco ha anunciado que la Iglesia celebrará un Año Jubilar en 2025, con el tema de “Peregrinos de la esperanza”. En preparación para el Año Jubilar, el Papa Francisco pide a los católicos que se preparen dedicando tiempo a estudiar los documentos del Concilio Vaticano II y se centren en la oración. Es necesario revisar las cuatro constituciones del Vaticano II (Sobre la Sagrada Liturgia, Luz de las Naciones, Palabra de Dios y La Iglesia en el Mundo Moderno). Estén atentos para obtener más información sobre este tema. El obispo Checchio inaugurará el Año Jubilar de 2025 en la Diócesis de Metuchen en la Misa de las 5:00 p. m. en la Catedral de San Francisco el sábado 28 de diciembre de 2024, Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José.
