Dear Family!

The Book of Wisdom could be understood in two parts: In the first chapters 1-9, Solomon guides the people who rule, to embrace righteousness and follow his example. In the second chapters 10-18, Solomon reveals the close connection between righteousness and wisdom in the history of the chosen people of God especially chapter 10 devoted to Creation and the rest is to Exodus.

The First Reading today reveals to us the importance of vigilance as the Israelites kept vigil on the night of the Passover. This vigilance is related to worship and continues through to present time as we keep vigil to the new Passover, the Eucharist. The Second Reading also points us to the same theme that the exemplary people in the Old Testament lived their entire lives keeping the vigil, their Passover.

The ‘Parousia’ (Second Coming of Jesus) has its own special characteristics. As the masters come home late at night demanding the servants to wait on the masters, Jesus, our Master, comes homes to wait us, His servants. We witness that when the Celebrant comes down to serve the Eucharistic Food to the people of God. We need to be alert and ready in living and staying in holiness of life and in our virtues.

Thus, alertness and vigilance connect our readings this Sunday. Jesus encourages us to be vigilant in our spiritual life. In CCC 2730 the Church teaches us, “In positive terms, the battle against the possessive and dominating self requires vigilance, sobriety of heart. When Jesus insists on vigilance, he always relates it to himself, to his coming on the last day and every day: today. The bridegroom comes in the middle of the night; the light that must not be extinguished is that of faith: "'Come,' my heart says, 'seek his face!’”( Psalm 27:8).

Religious Teachers Filippini: This Sunday we remember and pray for the sisters who belong to this institute of consecrated life. Their charism is expressed in the following words: Faithful to the original inspiration of our Founders, St. Lucy Filippini and Cardinal Mark Anthony Barbarigo, we continue to regard the ministry of the Christian education of youth and of adults, especially women, as our principal duty. Impelled by our mandate to “go and teach the Word of God” we, the Religious Teachers Filippini, reaffirm our commitment to Catholic Education. The second collection today, as suggested by our diocese will be to help these sisters in their mission. Thank you for your generosity.

Diocesan Jubilee Pilgrimage to the National Shrine in Washington, DC, (Sept. 20th). The Bishop will celebrate a special Mass at the Blue Army Shrine on September 13th (maybe those who cannot go to DC might want a more local pilgrimage).

New Jersey March for Life is on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

150th Anniversary of Catholic Education in Phillipsburg (Sun, Dec 7th at 11am)
As the anniversary approaches near, there are preliminary preparations that need to happen. Please save the date: Sunday, December 7th, the Bishop will celebrate a special mass at 11am to mark the event. All are welcome!

HVAC upgrade to Chapel and Sacristy: At the height of summer, we were hit with the bad news that our HVAC system in the chapel gave in. After discussing the problem with different companies, we are in the middle of replacing the whole system since the old system was installed in the 90s and is not energy efficient. Please pray for this project. I thank the people who have made contributions towards this project.

Diocesan Programs in the near future: A Bible study program from September 4th to December 18th, the topic is Prophets. The second part is planned from Jan 15th to Mar 19th on the same topic. Surviving Divorce (an 8 week program organized by the Diocese): This program is for those seeking healing from separation or divorce. It starts on October 1st and ends on November 19th. The sessions will only be on Wednesdays from 6:30pm to 8pm at the Pastoral Center. The 2nd Annual mass for Italian Apostolate will be held at the Newark Cathedral on Oct 4th at 5pm. Jay Donofrio, our Diocesan Youth Director is announcing the launch of a new podcast ‘No half Saints’. Please check it out on YouTube.

19º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

¡Querida familia!

El Libro de la Sabiduría puede entenderse en dos partes: en los primeros capítulos del 1 al 9, Salomón guía al pueblo gobernante a abrazar la justicia y seguir su ejemplo. En los segundos capítulos del 10 al 18), Salomón revela la estrecha conexión entre la justicia y la sabiduría en la historia del pueblo elegido de Dios, especialmente el capítulo 10, dedicado a la Creación, y el resto al Éxodo.

La primera lectura de hoy nos revela la importancia de la vigilancia, como la que los israelitas mantuvieron en la noche de la Pascua. Esta vigilancia está relacionada con el culto y continúa hasta nuestros días, mientras velamos por la nueva Pascua, la Eucaristía. La segunda lectura también nos recuerda el mismo tema: el pueblo ejemplar del Antiguo Testamento vivió toda su vida velando por su Pascua.

La Parusía (Segunda Venida de Jesús) tiene sus propias características. Mientras los amos llegan a casa tarde en la noche exigiendo a los sirvientes que los atiendan, Jesús, nuestro Maestro, regresa a casa para esperarnos a nosotros, sus siervos. Damos testimonio de ello cuando el Celebrante baja a servir el Alimento Eucarístico al pueblo de Dios. Necesitamos estar atentos y preparados para vivir y permanecer en santidad y en nuestras virtudes.

Así, la vigilancia y la atención conectan nuestras lecturas de este domingo. Jesús nos anima a estar vigilantes en nuestra vida espiritual. En el CIC 2730, la Iglesia nos enseña: «En términos positivos, la lucha contra el yo posesivo y dominante exige vigilancia, sobriedad de corazón. Cuando Jesús insiste en la vigilancia, siempre la relaciona con él mismo, con su venida en el último día y cada día: hoy. El esposo llega en medio de la noche; la luz que no debe extinguirse es la de la fe: «Vengan —dice mi corazón—, busquen su rostro»» (Salmo 27,8).

Maestras Religiosas Filippini: Este domingo recordamos y oramos por las hermanas que pertenecen a este instituto de vida consagrada. Su carisma se expresa en las siguientes palabras: Fieles a la inspiración original de nuestros Fundadores, Santa Lucía Filippini y el Cardenal Marco Antonio Barbarigo, seguimos considerando el ministerio de la educación cristiana de jóvenes y adultos, especialmente de las mujeres, como nuestro principal deber. Impulsadas por nuestro mandato de «ir y enseñar la Palabra de Dios», nosotras, las Maestras Religiosas Filippini, reafirmamos nuestro compromiso con la Educación Católica. La segunda colecta de hoy, según lo sugerido por nuestra diócesis, será para ayudar a estas hermanas en su misión. Gracias por su generosidad.

Peregrinación Diocesana del Jubileo al Santuario Nacional en Washington, D.C. (20 de septiembre). El obispo celebrará una misa especial en el Santuario del Ejército Azul el 13 de septiembre (quizás quienes no puedan ir a D.C. deseen una peregrinación más local).

La Marcha por la Vida de Nueva Jersey será el jueves 25 de septiembre de 2025.

150º Aniversario de la Educación Católica en Phillipsburg (Domingo 7 de diciembre, 11am)
A medida que se acerca el aniversario, es necesario realizar preparativos preliminares. Por favor, reserven la fecha: el domingo 7 de diciembre, el Obispo celebrará una misa especial a las 11:00 am para conmemorar el evento. ¡Todos son bienvenidos!

Actualización del sistema de climatización (HVAC) de la capilla y la sacristía: En pleno verano, recibimos la mala noticia de que nuestro sistema de climatización (HVAC) de la capilla dejó de funcionar. Tras hablar del problema con diferentes empresas, estamos en proceso de reemplazar todo el sistema, ya que el antiguo se instaló en los años 90 y no es energéticamente eficiente. Les pido que oren por este proyecto. Agradezco a quienes han contribuido a él.

Programas Diocesanos: El programa de estudio bíblico se llevará a cabo del 4 de septiembre al 18 de diciembre, con el tema "Profetas". La segunda parte está prevista del 15 de enero al 19 de marzo, sobre el mismo tema. Sobreviviendo al Divorcio (programa de 8 semanas organizado por la Diócesis): Este programa está dirigido aquellos que buscan sanar tras una separación o divorcio. Comienza el 1 de octubre y termina el 19 de noviembre. Las sesiones serán solo los miércoles de 6:30pm a 8pm en el Centro Pastoral. La 2.ª misa anual del Apostolado Italiano se celebrará en la Catedral de Newark el 4 de octubre a las 5:00 pm.
