Dear Family!

In the Gospel, Jesus’ words could have caused havoc to the people who read the Bible in English when he said, “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.”

God’s Word, Jesus takes root in us from the beginning to the end of our life on earth to bring us life and that life in fullness.

Semitic languages do not have a word for ‘prefer’. “When a person prefers one thing over another, that person is said to ‘love’ that thing and ‘hate’ the other.” (Geoffrey Plant). Jesus’ preaching is not about hate but Jesus must have first place if one wishes to follow Him.

Looking at the large crowd following Jesus, this message is very powerful and contextual when Jesus teaches about the cost of discipleship. The three areas to address in the gospel are 1. Putting God above family 2. Bearing one’s cross and 3. Leaving it all. We witness the Apostles grow into some of these commitments as time passed. In the same way we continue to grow into these commitments as individuals and as a community.

Welcome to all our Faith Formation children and OCIA members along with their catechist and formators! We will have a special opening mass for Faith formation on Tuesday the 9th of September at 4:30pm. Please come to the church.

Diocesan Jubilee Pilgrimage to the National Shrine in Washington, DC, (Sept. 20th). The Bishop will celebrate a special Mass at the Blue Army Shrine on September 13th (maybe those who cannot go to DC might want a more local pilgrimage). September 13th is the 108th anniversary of the 5th Apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. New Jersey March for Life is on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

Pride in Priest Dinner organized by the Knights of Columbus is on September 18, 2025 at 6pm in The Imperia on Easton, 1714 Easton Ave, Somerset, NJ 08873

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. May the Lord in His healing mercy restore to health all those afflicted, and send His Holy Spirit upon medical staff, scientists, and caregivers!

Bishop Checchio has been appointed by our Pope as a member of Vatican’s Dicastery for the Clergy. Our Prayers are with our Bishop as he takes on this new role and continues to serve as the Bishop of Metuchen.

150th Anniversary of Catholic Education in Phillipsburg (Sun, Dec 7th at 11am)
As the anniversary approaches near, there are preliminary preparations that need to happen. Please save the date: Sunday, December 7th, the Bishop will celebrate a special mass at 11am to mark the event. All are welcome!

Mercy Hall Building Updates: After the roof work and installation of 29 energy efficient windows at the top floor we are continuing the repair of all the classrooms. Please pray for the boiler situation in Mercy Hall. We hope to have a solution before winter starts.

Diocesan Programs in the near future: Bible study program from September 4th to December 18th. Feminine Genius Brunch (Oct 11) Blue Mass (Oct 29) Surviving Divorce (8 week program organized by the Diocese): This program starts on October 1st and ends on November 19th. Jay Donofrio, our Diocesan Youth Director is announcing the launch of a new podcast ‘No half Saints’. Please check it out in YouTube.

23º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

¡Querida familia!

En el Evangelio, las palabras de Jesús podrían haber causado estragos en las personas que leen la Biblia en inglés cuando dijo: “Si alguno viene a mí y no aborrece a su padre y madre, mujer e hijos, hermanos y hermanas, e incluso su propia vida, no puede ser mi discípulo”.

La Palabra de Dios, Jesús, se arraiga en nosotros desde el principio hasta el fin de nuestra vida terrenal para darnos vida, y esa vida en plenitud. Las lenguas semíticas no tienen una palabra para «preferir». «Cuando una persona prefiere una cosa sobre otra, se dice que esa persona la ama y la odia». (Geoffrey Plant). La predicación de Jesús no se trata de odio, pero Jesús debe tener prioridad si uno desea seguirlo.

Al observar a la gran multitud que seguía a Jesús, este mensaje es muy poderoso y contextual, pues Jesús enseña sobre el costo del discipulado. Las tres áreas que aborda el evangelio son: 1. Poner a Dios por encima de la familia; 2. Cargar con la propia cruz; y 3. Dejarlo todo. Vemos cómo los apóstoles se aferraban a algunos de estos compromisos con el paso del tiempo. De la misma manera, nosotros seguimos aferrándonos a estos compromisos como individuos y como comunidad.

¡Bienvenidos a todos nuestros niños de Formación en la Fe y miembros de OCIA, junto con sus maestros y formadores! Tendremos una misa de apertura especial para la Formación en la Fe el martes 9 de septiembre a las 4:30 p. m. Por favor, vengan a la iglesia.

Peregrinación Diocesana Jubilar al Santuario Nacional en Washington, D.C. (20 de septiembre). El obispo celebrará una misa especial en el Santuario del Ejército Azul el 13 de septiembre (quizás quienes no puedan ir a D.C. prefieran una peregrinación más local). El 13 de septiembre se conmemora el 108.º aniversario de la quinta aparición de Nuestra Señora de Fátima. La Marcha por la Vida de Nueva Jersey será el jueves 25 de septiembre de 2025.

La cena “Pride in Priest” organizada por los Caballeros de Colón se llevará a cabo el 18 de septiembre de 2025 a las 6 pm en The Imperia en Easton, 1714 Easton Ave, Somerset, NJ 08873.

Septiembre es el Mes de Concientización sobre el Cáncer Infantil. Que el Señor, en su misericordia sanadora, restaure la salud a todos los afectados y envíe su Espíritu Santo al personal médico, los científicos y los cuidadores.

El Obispo Checchio ha sido nombrado por nuestro Papa como miembro del Dicasterio para el Clero del Vaticano. Acompañamos en nuestras oraciones a nuestro Obispo mientras asume este nuevo cargo y continúa sirviendo como Obispo de Metuchen.

150º Aniversario de la Educación Católica en Phillipsburg (Domingo 7 de diciembre, 11am)

Por favor, oren por el problema de la caldera en Mercy Hall. Esperamos tener una solución antes del inicio del invierno.
