Dear Family! Focusing on the readings of this Sunday, I thought about a quote that made me stop and think, “Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.” (JRR Tolkien). Prophet Habakkuk in the first reading, amidst the cloud of Babylonian exile of the people of God, not to give up on God especially when the road darkens, sure enough that was the darkest road they have ever seen! What is required in these circumstances in our life? Faith - a persevering trust that God will eventually intervene.

The readings are focused on the notion of faith. Even scientists agree that “both religion and science are founded on faith.” It is also important to know that the word ‘creed’ (my belief, my faith, my conviction) is a combination of two Latin words. ‘Cor’ (which means ‘Heart) and ‘dare’ (which mean ‘to give’). Thus, when we talk about faith, it refers to the intellectual faculties that I associate my convictions but more importantly, it refers to the convictions to which I give my heart to. If I have my heart intimately connected to my convictions, I have faith. “Faith is like Wi-Fi, it’s invisible but it has the power to connect you to what you need.” (Unknown).

How closely related the two requests of the apostles are: ‘Lord increase our faith’ and ‘Lord teach us how to pray’. Every attempt to increase our faith is prayer and every prayer is aimed to grow in our faith. We have the opportunity to ask the Lord the same in the month of October as this month is dedicated to praying the Rosary. I encourage you to feel the Rosary in our hands often, just feel it! Let us stay close to Rosary!

The Pope has appointed Bishop James Checchio as the Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans: A ‘coadjutor’ bishop is appointed to assist the diocesan bishop until his retirement. When the Archbishop of New Orleans retires and the Holy Father accepts his resignation, Bishop Checchio automatically becomes the Archbishop of New Orleans. In the meantime, Bishop Checchio becomes the Administrator of the Diocese of Metuchen. No date of his departure, his farewell, or any other information regarding the successor – all to be determined. Please keep our Bishop in our prayers!

October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary: Memorial of Our Lady of Rosary is celebrated on the 7th of October. Also, this month we have Memorials to St. Therese of the Child Jesus, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Ignatius of Antioch. Jubilee of the Missions and Migrants on Oct 4-5. Jubilee of Consecrated Life on Oct 8-9. Marian spirituality on October 12th centers around two major events in 2025: the closing Mass of the Jubilee of Marian Spirituality in Rome, presided over by the Pope, and the feast day of Our Lady of the Pillar, a significant Marian title. The Jubilee is a special event celebrating devotion to Mary, while the feast day commemorates her appearance to Saint James. October 19th there will be a Canonization Mass for 7 blessed.

150th Anniversary of Catholic Education in Phillipsburg (Sun, Dec 7th at 11am)
As the anniversary approaches near, there are preliminary preparations that need to happen. Please save the date: Sunday, December 7th, Bishop Checchio will celebrate a special mass at 11am to mark the event. All are welcome!

Mercy Hall Building Updates: After the roof work and installation of 29 energy efficient windows at the top floor we are continuing the repair of all the classrooms. Please pray for the boiler situation in Mercy Hall. We hope to have a solution before winter starts.

27º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

¡Querida familia!

Centrándome en las lecturas de este domingo, pensé en una cita que me hizo reflexionar: «Infiel es el que se despide cuando el camino se oscurece» (J. R. R. Tolkien). El profeta Habacuc, en la primera lectura, en medio de la nube del exilio babilónico del pueblo de Dios, nos dice que no nos abandonamos a Dios, especialmente cuando el camino se oscurece. ¡Ese fue el camino más oscuro que jamás hayan visto! ¿Qué se requiere en estas circunstancias de nuestra vida? Fe: una confianza perseverante en que Dios finalmente intervendrá.

Las lecturas se centran en la noción de fe. Incluso los científicos coinciden en que «tanto la religión como la ciencia se basan en la fe». También es importante saber que «credo» (mi creencia, mi fe, mi convicción) es una combinación de dos palabras latinas: «Cor» (que significa «corazón») y «dare» (que significa «dar»). Por lo tanto, cuando hablamos de fe, nos referimos a las facultades intelectuales que asocio con mis convicciones, pero aún más importante, a las convicciones a las que entrego mi corazón. Si mi corazón está íntimamente conectado con mis convicciones, tengo fe. «La fe es como el wifi: es invisible, pero tiene el poder de conectarte con lo que necesitas». (Desconocido).

Qué íntimamente relacionadas están las dos peticiones de los apóstoles: «Señor, auméntanos la fe» y «Señor, enséñanos a orar». Todo intento por aumentar nuestra fe es oración, y toda oración tiene como objetivo crecer en ella. Tenemos la oportunidad de pedirle esto mismo al Señor en el mes de octubre, ya que este mes está dedicado al rezo del Rosario. Los animo a sentir el Rosario en nuestras manos con frecuencia, ¡simplemente siéntanlo! ¡Mantengamos el Rosario cerca!

El Papa ha nombrado al obispo James Checchio arzobispo coadjutor de Nueva Orleans: Se nombra a un obispo coadjutor para asistir al obispo diocesano hasta su jubilación. Cuando el arzobispo de Nueva Orleans se jubile y el Santo Padre acepte su renuncia, el obispo Checchio se convierte automáticamente en arzobispo de Nueva Orleans. Mientras tanto, el obispo Checchio se convierte en administrador de la diócesis de Metuchen. Aún no se ha determinado la fecha de su partida, su despedida ni ninguna otra información sobre su sucesor. ¡Por favor, mantengan a nuestro obispo en nuestras oraciones!

Octubre está dedicado al Santísimo Rosario: La memoria de Nuestra Señora del Rosario se celebra el 7 de octubre. Además, este mes se conmemoran las memorias de Santa Teresita del Niño Jesús, San Francisco de Asís y San Ignacio de Antioquía. El Jubileo de las Misiones y los Migrantes se celebra el 4 y 5 de octubre. El Jubileo de la Vida Consagrada se celebra el 8 y 9 de octubre. La espiritualidad mariana, el 12 de octubre, se centra en dos eventos importantes en 2025: la Misa de clausura del Jubileo de la Espiritualidad Mariana en Roma, presidida por el Papa, y la festividad de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, un importante título mariano. El Jubileo es un evento especial que celebra la devoción a María, mientras que la festividad conmemora su aparición a Santiago Apóstol. El 19 de octubre se celebrará la Misa de Canonización de siete beatos.

150º Aniversario de la Educación Católica en Phillipsburg (Domingo 7 de diciembre, 11am)
A medida que se acerca el aniversario, es necesario realizar preparativos preliminares. Por favor, reserven la fecha: el domingo 7 de diciembre, el Obispo celebrará una misa especial a las 11:00 am para conmemorar el evento. ¡Todos son bienvenidos!

Actualizaciones del edificio Mercy Hall: Tras las obras del techo y la instalación de 29 ventanas de bajo consumo en la planta superior, continuamos con la reparación de todas las aulas. Por favor, oren por el problema de la caldera en Mercy Hall. Esperamos tener una solución antes del inicio del invierno.
