Dear Family!

We are blessed indeed to celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ on this Sunday. At one time we usually celebrated this on the Thursday before the 7th Sunday in Easter. It has since been permanently moved to the 7th Sunday of Easter.

Saint Thomas Aquinas explains that in the Ascension Jesus enters into heaven with our humanity. This way Jesus glorifies our human nature.

Jesus enters heaven with our human nature not for himself but for us. Aquinas cites Micah 2:13, “He shall go up that shall open the way before them.” He further explains that Christ is the Head and where the Head goes, the body (We are the body) follows. Saint Augustine taught us that “By celebrating this feast (Solemnity), we ascend with our Lord and have our hearts above. For the Resurrection of the Lord is our hope, and His Ascension our glorification.”

The Catechism teaches us, “Only the one who came from the Father” can return to the Father: Christ Jesus. “No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man.” Left to its own natural powers humanity does not have access to the “Father's house”, to God's life and happiness. Only Christ can open to man such access that we, his members, might have confidence that we too shall go where he, our Head and our Source, has preceded us.”

Ascension of Jesus marks the end of his journey on earth and signals the beginning of a new era. The mission of the Church begins under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Luke in the first reading shows that “the time of Israel” has yielded to “the time of Christ.” Now, “the time of Christ” is to yield to “the time of the Church.”. It does not mean Jesus is absent, rather, Jesus is present to us through the Holy Spirit, in and through the liturgical celebrations of our Church, and wherever two or three are gathered in his name. On this glorious Solemnity of the Ascension, I wish you all God’s blessings!

Ordinations for the Diocese of Metuchen 2026: The diocese has announced that Rev. Mr. James F Prumos will be ordained to the Order of Priests and Mr. Patrick J Rasimowicz will be ordained to the order of Deacon. Ordination to Priesthood and Diaconate will be at the Cathedral on June 20th, 10am. Please pray for these young men who said ‘Yes’ to the Service of God and Church.

The National release of the film: ‘That They May Be One’ will be May 19th and 20th. This film provides a compelling case for Christian Unity, connecting the charismatic movement within both Catholic and Protestant Circles.

Special Franciscan Jubilee Year (January 10, 2026 - January 10, 2027)
Pope Leo XIV has proclaimed this year a Special Jubilee to mark the 800th Anniversary of St. Francis’ death in 1226. To commemorate the spirituality of St. Francis, we will have a weekly quote from St. Francis in our Bulletin.

250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence: As for the preparation in parish level, I strongly encourage you to share your faith in writing an article for the parish community. The topic - Our American Story: How my faith influenced my identity as an American and how being an American influenced my life as a Christian/Catholic. Please send your article to the parish office.

Diocesan Programs in the near future: NJ Catholic Youth Rally (May 17th). Save the Date heads up that this year is the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Ascensión Del Señor

¡Querida familia!

Verdaderamente somos bendecidos al celebrar, este domingo, la Solemnidad de la Ascensión de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Antiguamente, solíamos celebrarla el jueves anterior al séptimo domingo de Pascua; desde entonces, ha sido trasladada de manera permanente al séptimo domingo de Pascua.

Santo Tomás de Aquino explica que, en la Ascensión, Jesús entra en el cielo con nuestra humanidad. De este modo, Jesús glorifica nuestra naturaleza humana. Jesús entra en el cielo con nuestra naturaleza humana no por sí mismo, sino por nosotros. Aquino cita Miqueas 2:13: «Subirá el que les abrirá el camino». Explica además que Cristo es la Cabeza y que, adonde va la Cabeza, el cuerpo — nosotros somos el cuerpo— la sigue. San Agustín nos enseñó que: «Al celebrar esta fiesta (Solemnidad), ascendemos con nuestro Señor y tenemos nuestros corazones en lo alto. Pues la Resurrección del Señor es nuestra esperanza, y su Ascensión, nuestra glorificación».

El Catecismo nos enseña: «Solo aquel que "vino del Padre" puede volver al Padre: Cristo Jesús. "Nadie ha subido al cielo sino el que bajó del cielo, el Hijo del hombre". Abandonada a sus propias fuerzas naturales, la humanidad no tiene acceso a la "casa del Padre", a la vida y a la felicidad de Dios. Solo Cristo puede abrir al hombre tal acceso, para que nosotros, sus miembros, tengamos la confianza de que también iremos adonde Él, nuestra Cabeza y nuestra Fuente, nos ha precedido».

La Ascensión de Jesús marca el fin de su camino en la tierra y señala el comienzo de una nueva era. La misión de la Iglesia se inicia bajo la guía del Espíritu Santo. Lucas, en la primera lectura, muestra que «el tiempo de Israel» ha dado paso a «el tiempo de Cristo». Ahora, «el tiempo de Cristo» ha de dar paso a «el tiempo de la Iglesia». Esto no significa que Jesús esté ausente; por el contrario, Jesús está presente entre nosotros a través del Espíritu Santo, en y por medio de las celebraciones litúrgicas de nuestra Iglesia, y dondequiera que dos o tres se reúnan en su nombre. En esta gloriosa Solemnidad de la Ascensión, ¡les deseo a todos las bendiciones de Dios!

Ordenaciones para la Diócesis de Metuchen 2026: La diócesis ha anunciado que el Rev. Sr. James F. Prumos será ordenado al Orden de los Presbíteros y el Sr. Patrick J. Rasimowicz será ordenado al Orden del Diaconado. La ordenación al sacerdocio y al diaconado tendrá lugar en la Catedral el 20 de junio, a las 10:00 a. m. Por favor, oren por estos jóvenes que han dicho «sí» al servicio de Dios y de la Iglesia.

Película sobre la unidad cristiana
El estreno nacional de la película “That They May Be One” tendrá lugar los días 19 y 20 de mayo. La película presenta un argumento convincente a favor de la unidad cristiana, conectando al movimiento carismático tanto en los círculos católicos como en los protestantes.

El Papa León XIV ha proclamado este año como un Jubileo Especial para conmemorar el 800.º aniversario de la muerte de San Francisco, acaecida en 1226. Para celebrar la espiritualidad de San Francisco, incluiremos una cita semanal suya en nuestro boletín.
